How to Sim Your Character for Mythic+
A default sim models one boss standing still for five minutes. Mythic+ is packs of trash, funnel windows, and constant movement. If you gear off Patchwerk numbers for M+, you'll overvalue single-target and undervalue burst AoE — here's how to sim it right.
Why Patchwerk numbers lie for dungeons
Patchwerk — the default fight style — is a stationary single-target fight named after the original stand-and-hit boss. It's the cleanest benchmark for raid single-target, which is why it's the default, and why most published DPS rankings use it. But dungeon damage is dominated by multi-target windows: a trinket or stat build that looks mediocre on Patchwerk can be far ahead when it hits five targets at once, and vice versa. The gap between a single-target and a dungeon-style ranking is routinely bigger than the gap between two gear choices.
The fight styles that matter
- DungeonSlice — the standard M+ profile. A fixed six-minute encounter alternating between boss-like single-target and mixed trash packs. Boss count and fight length are locked, because the profile defines them.
- DungeonRoute — models a dungeon route with variable pull sizes. Closer to a real key's rhythm; use it as a second opinion next to DungeonSlice.
- HecticAddCleave — heavy add spawns with movement. Useful for specs whose M+ value hangs on priority-add cleave.
- Patchwerk with more bosses — setting Bosses to 4–5 gives you a sustained-AoE benchmark. Unrealistic as a full fight, but handy for isolating pure AoE throughput.
Step by step
- Load your character — paste your /simc export or use the Armory import (basics here).
- Open Simulation Settings below the mode cards and change Fight Style from Patchwerk to DungeonSlice (or DungeonRoute).
- Pick your mode. A plain DPS sim gives you your dungeon DPS baseline; the Droptimizer with your dungeons ticked and your usual key level set ranks M+ loot specifically.
- Run it — and if you also raid, run the same comparison on Patchwerk. Items that rank high on both are your safe picks; items that only shine in one tell you what to carry in your bags and swap.
